![]() ![]() The sarcophagus of Hagia Triada shows that the aulos was present during sacrifices as early as 1300 BC. Music occupied an important role in the Greek sacrificial ceremonies. The offering of libations were often accompanied by a special libation melody called the spondeion, which was often accompanied by an aulos player. Before and after the Greek drinking parties, religious libations, or the religious the act of partaking and pouring out drink, would be made to deities, usually the Olympic gods, the heroes, and Zeus. A popular type of piece to be played while drinking at these drinking parties was the skolion, a piece composed to be heard while drinking. Music was also used for entertainment when it accompanied drinking-parties or symposia. Instrumental music served a religious and entertaining role in ancient Greece as it would often accompany religious events, rituals, and festivals. "The word 'music' expressed the entire education". Pericles' teacher Damon said, according to Plato in the Republic, "when fundamental modes of music change, the fundamental modes of the state change with them." Music and gymnastics comprised the main divisions in one's schooling. Music played an integral role in ancient Greek society. They developed tuning systems and harmonic principles that focused on simple integers and ratios, laying a foundation for acoustic science however, this was not the only school of thought in ancient Greece. : 130–131 The Pythagoreans focused on the mathematics and the acoustical science of sound and music. Pythagoras in particular believed that music was subject to the same mathematical laws of harmony as the mechanics of the cosmos, evolving into an idea known as the music of the spheres. Some ancient Greek philosophers discussed the study of music in ancient Greece. : x Our understanding of ancient Greek music theory, musical systems, and musical ethos comes almost entirely from the surviving teachings of the Pythagoreans, Ptolemy, Philodemus, Aristoxenus, Aristides, and Plato. The music and music theory of ancient Greece laid the foundation for western music and western music theory, as it would go on to influence the ancient Romans, the early Christian church and the medieval composers. The word music comes from the Muses, the daughters of Zeus and patron goddesses of creative and intellectual endeavours.Ĭoncerning the origin of music and musical instruments: the history of music in ancient Greece is so closely interwoven with Greek mythology and legend that it is often difficult to surmise what is historically true and what is myth. There are some fragments of actual Greek musical notation, many literary references, depictions on ceramics and relevant archaeological remains, such that some things can be known-or reasonably surmised-about what the music sounded like, the general role of music in society, the economics of music, the importance of a professional caste of musicians, etc. It this played an integral role in the lives of ancient Greeks. Music was almost universally present in ancient Greek society, from marriages, funerals, and religious ceremonies to theatre, folk music, and the ballad-like reciting of epic poetry. As an alternative to conventional oxygen delivery for hypoxemic patients, HFNC oxygen therapy has been receiving more and more attention. The difference between patient inspiratory flow and delivered flow is large, and as a result, F IO 2 is both inconstant and often lower than expected. Meanwhile, the inspiratory flow of patients with respiratory failure varies widely in a range from 30 to more than 100 L/min. Using conventional devices, oxygen flow is limited to no more than 15 L/min. ![]() Insufficient heating and humidification leads to poor tolerance to oxygen therapy. ![]() Bubble humidifiers are commonly used for humidifying air delivered to spontaneously breathing patients, but when absolute humidity is low, patients still complain of discomfort. Usually, oxygen is not humidified at low flow, and complaints, especially dry nose, dry throat, and nasal pain, are common. Several drawbacks are associated with these devices, which may limit efficacy and tolerance of oxygen delivery. Oxygen is generally provided via face masks and nasal cannula. The patient breathes the adequately heated and humidified medical gas through nasal cannulas with a large diameter.Īdministration of supplemental oxygen has been the first-line therapy for hypoxemic patients. The gas is heated and humidified through an active heated humidifier and delivered via a single-limb heated inspiratory circuit. An air/oxygen blender, allowing from 0.21 to 1.0 F IO 2, generates up to 60 L/min flow. Principle setup of high-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy. Even so, it helps COPD patients mainly by decreasing anatomical dead space and secondarily by improving alveolar ventilation. ![]() Since neither inspiratory push nor expiratory pull is effective in such an open circuit, HFNC cannot actively enhance V T. While interfaces for NIV increase anatomical dead space, those for HFNC actually decrease dead space. Another major difference between NIV and HFNC is the interface. The gas is heated and humidified with the active humidifier and delivered through the heated circuit (Figure 1). At the air/oxygen blender, the inspiratory fraction of oxygen (F IO 2) is set from 0.21 to 1.0 in a flow of up to 60 L/min. The apparatus comprises an air/oxygen blender, an active heated humidifier, a single heated circuit, and a nasal cannula. High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen delivery has been gaining attention as an alternative means of respiratory support for critically ill patients. Because of poor mask tolerance, however, NIV is sometimes inapplicable. For patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), noninvasive ventilation (NIV) has become the preferred primary modality for respiratory support because it enhances inspiratory tidal volume (V T) and maintains adequate alveolar ventilation. Currently, to ensure adequate alveolar ventilation, minute ventilation is manipulated during invasive or noninvasive ventilatory support. ![]() In this, ensuring adequate alveolar ventilation is essential for expelling carbon dioxide produced in the human body. The purpose of respiratory support is to maintain adequate ventilation and oxygenation. Despite these issues, HFNC oxygen therapy is an innovative and effective modality for the early treatment of adults with respiratory failure with diverse underlying diseases. Some important issues remain to be resolved, such as its indication, timing of starting and stopping HFNC, and escalating treatment. Many published reports suggest that HFNC decreases breathing frequency and work of breathing and reduces needs of escalation of respiratory support in patients with diverse underlying diseases. Evidence with critically ill adults are poor however, physicians apply it to a variety of patients with diverse underlying diseases: hypoxemic respiratory failure, acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, post-extubation, pre-intubation oxygenation, sleep apnea, acute heart failure, patients with do-not-intubate order, and so on. Most of the available data has been published in the neonatal field. While there have been no big randomized clinical trials, it has been gaining attention as an innovative respiratory support for critically ill patients. It delivers adequately heated and humidified medical gas at up to 60 L/min of flow and is considered to have a number of physiological effects: reduction of anatomical dead space, PEEP effect, constant fraction of inspired oxygen, and good humidification. High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen therapy comprises an air/oxygen blender, an active humidifier, a single heated circuit, and a nasal cannula. ![]() ![]() Nowadays most top level tournaments and tournaments outside the United States use Fischer's system. The increment time control was first used in the privately organised 1992 Fischer–Spassky match, and quickly became popular in the wider chess world, being subsequently used in the FIDE World Chess Championship 1998. ![]() This timing method is occasionally called "accumulation" but it is usually called "increment", "bonus", or "Fischer". In this way, the players would never be desperately short of time. This became the linchpin of Fischer's clock patented ten years later. Joseph Meshi called this "Accumulation" as it was a main feature of his patented Micromate-180 (US Patent 4,247,925 1978). Fischer's digital clock gave each player a fixed period of time at the start of the game and then added a small amount after each move. One particularly notable development, which has gained quite wide acceptance in chess, was proposed by former world champion Bobby Fischer, who in 1988 filed for US patent 4,884,255 (awarded in 1989) for a new type of digital chess clock. Time control is commonly used in modern chess in many different methodologies. Fischer clock and related designs ĭigital chess clock connected to a board that automatically senses when moves have been made.ĭigital clocks and Internet gaming have spurred a wave of experimentation with more varied and complex time controls than the traditional standards. Three years later a much-improved Micromate-180 was produced alongside Meshi's MBA Thesis, "Demand Analysis for a New Product (The Digital Chess Clock)", at San Diego State University, while Meshi and Ponsor continued to develop digital gaming. There was only one made and this was tested by chess players in multiple tournaments. The first commercially available digital chess clock was patented in 1975 by Joseph Meshi and Jeffrey R. But it successfully addressed the original goals of the project (accurate and matched timing). The clock only had one mode: time ran forward. Each player had a separate counter, and, in a parallel to the original mechanical architecture, one player's counter was disabled while the other's was running. Being plugged into the wall is obviously a major drawback, but had one advantage: the timebase for the clock was driven off a rectified version of 60 cycle AC current. In 1973, LSI chips were not readily or cheaply available, so all the multiplexing and logic were done using chips that consisted of four two-input TTL NAND gates, which resulted in excessive power consumption. This meant that each player's time had to be multiplexed to the display when their time was running. The high cost of LEDs at the time meant that only one set of digits could be displayed, that of the player whose turn it was to move. LEDs require significant power, and as a result, the clock had to be plugged into a wall outlet. For example, the display was done with red LEDs. Typical of most inventions, it was crude compared to the products on the market many years later and was limited by the technology that existed at the time. In 1973, to address the issues with analog clocks, Bruce Cheney, a Cornell University Electrical Engineering student and chess player, created the first digital chess clock as a project for an undergraduate EE course. It is not unusual in slow chess games for a player to leave the table, but the clock of the absent player continues to run if it is their turn, or starts to run if their opponent makes a move. The opening moves in chess are often played quickly due to their familiarity, which leaves the players more time to consider more complex and unfamiliar positions later. The players may take more or less time over any individual move. ![]() ![]() The simplest time control is "sudden death", in which players must make a predetermined number of moves in a certain amount of time or forfeit the game immediately.Ī particularly popular variant is blitz chess, in which each player is given a short time, such as five minutes, on the clock in which to play the entire game. Their use has since spread to tournament Scrabble, shogi, go, and nearly every competitive two-player board game, as well as other types of games. Invented by Thomas Bright Wilson of Manchester Chess Club, the clocks were first used during competition at the London 1883 tournament. The purpose is to keep track of the total time each player takes for their own moves, and ensure that neither player overly delays the game.Ĭhess clocks were first used extensively in tournament chess, and are often called game clocks. Chess clocks are used in chess and other two-player games where the players move in turn, and in some legal settings where each side is allotted a specific amount of time for arguments. A chess clock consists of two adjacent clocks with buttons to stop one clock while starting the other, so that the two clocks never run simultaneously. ![]() ![]() ![]() While you can use your Chromecast without a dedicated Wi-Fi connection, you will still need an internet connection.
